Creative team Dan and Simon share their thoughts on the importance of space, cakes and comfy chairs to creativity.
Dan: A nice, simple, uncluttered room is really important when you start on a brief. I think it helps you clear your mind and really focus. It’s also satisfying to make your own mess – the place normally looks like a tip by the time we’ve finished.
Simon: I agree, you can fill the room with your ideas. But you need a bit of order amongst the chaos. That’s why it’s good to have somewhere to pin up your scribbles. I also like a bit of space to flail my arms around when I get excited by something. You don’t want to be sitting on top of each other, someone could lose an eye.
Dan: To come up with good stuff you need to feel completely relaxed. For me that means a comfy chair, a cuppa, cakes and a locked door to keep account handlers at bay!
Pin board: Somewhere to put up your ideas and give them the critical once-over.
Comfy chairs: you’re often sitting there all day, so the last thing you want is a numb or aching posterior.
Cakes and coffee – the rocket-fuel of creativity.
Good tunes: a little bit of mood music is always essential, unless it’s Dan’s Rocky soundtrack.
Pens: Ideas always look better scrawled with a big fat marker. Plus, the fumes are hallucinogenic.
Inspiring work: It’s good to surround yourself with other great bits of work. It motivates you to try harder.
